Support for LGBTI+ People in Ukraine
As are many of our allies, at LGBT Ireland we are assessing the rapidly developing situation in Ukraine and the region, and for LGBTI+ people.
We are currently contacting activists and other organisations working to support LGBTI+ communities in Ukraine and those fleeing, to better understand the needs and see what kind of support may be helpful. The situation on the ground is changing rapidly, and we will provide information on how best to support when appropriate.
Assessing needs
LGBTI+ groups in Ukraine are playing a critical role in trying to support their communities. Current needs are around shelter, access to food and medication and psychological support, and often relocation to safer places.
LGBTI+ groups in neighbouring countries have mobilised quickly to provide shelter and support such as food, medication, and other types of support.
We are also assessing the potential needs and appropriate responses to LGBTI+ people from Ukraine who do arrive in Ireland. And we are engaging with other LGBTI+ organisations and with Irish Refugee and Migrant organisations to make all necessary preparations and provide all necessary psycho-social supports.
How you can directly support at this moment
Firstly, we are looking to contact LGBTI+ people from Ukraine, who are living in Ireland to volunteer with us to advise and support our response. If you are able to help please contact us on [email protected]
For the moment, we are also being guided by ILGA Europe, who have advised that for now, it is most appropriate to direct donations to a) groups in Ukraine who are receiving funds and b) groups welcoming LGBTI+ people in neighbouring countries. We encourage people to support initiatives that are already in place and doing the work.
