‘Believe me or not but I am who I am’
LGBT Ireland in partnership with Irish Refugee Council launch important research
On Tuesday 28th June, LGBT Ireland and the Irish Refugee Council are delighted to launch important research to mark World Refugee Day and Pride 2022.
The research titled ‘Believe me or not but I am who I am’ aims to give voice to LGBTI+ people in the international protection process in Ireland, and to amplify those voices through clear, targeted recommendations for reform in the in the international protection assessment process that could make a significant difference for LGBTI+ applicants.
Speaking about the research, Paula Fagan, CEO of LGBT Ireland said: “LGBT Ireland is delighted to publish this research during Pride month, June 2022. This year’s Pride theme is courage, and the courage of each LGBTI+ participant in this study is palpable. The courage to leave their homes and families, the courage to be true to themselves despite fear of persecution, the courage to make the often-hazardous journey to Ireland, and the courage to speak their truth about who they are within the international protection interview process, a daunting and sometimes overwhelming task.”
Nick Henderson, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council said “Our Law Centre and advocacy work has supported LGBTI+ people seeking protection for many years. This work is a key milestone in illustrating the very particular and unique set of challenges LGBTI+ people Face in advancing their protection application.”
LGBT Ireland is a national organisation which provides quality services to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people across the country, carrying out impactful work with all members of the LGBTQ+ community, especially those from minority groups including LGBTQ+ Travellers, Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
Irish Refugee Council provides services and support for people seeking protection and people recognised as refugees in Ireland and advocate for humane and dignified protection procedures and responses to people fleeing persecution.
